LIVE AT SOULAR GROOVES 11. 26.2005 ::.

soular groove mix 11.2005
It's been nearly 3 years since I did my last mix at Soular Grooves. I first heard about the show about 5 months before I moved to Houston back in late 1999, through a mix CD by the legendary DJ Sun. At the time, I was starting to incorporate more downtempo and house into my raregroove, funk and hip hop sets and that CD was hitting that vibe on all cylinders.

Meeting the whole Soular Grooves family was a great blessing as they taught me a lot when it came to checking for artists, producers and labels. It's through Soular Grooves that I became friends with Melodic and Chicken George (future Parakitachi members).

Sun and the entire SG family has been a big influence on me, showing me that you can do your thing and develop your own niche in the deejay community without having to conform to topical tastes. I was back in Houston visiting my folks for the holidays and did a live improvised set consisting of some of my favorite records (past and present).

This mix is a pretty accurate representation of what you are likely to hear when I do my thing under my DJ Starsign guise. Enjoy the mix, I had a great time doing it. Big up to DJ Sun, Melodic, Lil Tiger, Sumaand Seth Jones for holding it down.

THE HIP HOP HEROES MIX ::.

hip hop mix

For your listening pleasure, I also recorded a hip hop mix. It's been a long time since I've done a straight-foward hip hop mix. Most of the time, I usually incorporate other genres in my mixes, but for this one, I decided to focus on the songs that most influenced my deejay style and basically just pulled out some of my favorite singles and LPs and freestyled this one. Most of the songs are from the 91 -94 era, and there are explicit lyrics so keep that in mind if you are a sensitive listener.

P.S. -- This mix was originally intended just for me to listen to while I rode around in my car, so I recorded it in one take... hence the gully vibe to it.

haiku

I'm not sure why I never released this mix. I think by the time I was going to, I had shifted directions and gone into a more electronic arena. Either way, this is one of the best mixes I put together. Pretty representative of what I used to spin from 2000-2003.

spliff cover

Back in 1995, I wanted to do a live score to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Thievery Corporation released a single called A Spliff Odyssey back in the day. I finally got around to doing a live score to the second half of the film and stole the name b/c it made sense. I only made 20 copies of the full mix. What is on here is an edited version. Stanley Kubrick is one of my heroes.

This mix is on the leftfield, mellow and downtempo tip. Perfect for lazy-calm situations.

Starsign's website, straight from Austin. DJ Starsign plays the eclectic beats. DJ Starsign aka Deejay Starsign aka Dave Starsign. Starsign, the graphic pimp and deejay. DJ Starsign the founder of the Parakitachi DJ Collective. DJ Starsign vs DJ Shadow, the new mix. DJ Starsign, the martini-sipping beat collector. Spinning music that crosses multiple genres and strays from the mainstream hype machine, Starsign has carved a niche as being one of the most adventerous DJs to come out of the South. It's difficult to define his deejay style in just one word; the closest approximations being "eclectic", "broad" and "open-minded". As a deejay with a refined ear for music and a percussionist's timing, you're bound to hear mixes that include elements of jazz, soul, dub, house, electro, hip hop, broken beat, latin, rock and underground all blended into one diverse musical journey. Such dedication and expansive knowledge of music has taken him to New York City, Paris, Stockholm, Amsterdam and beyond.
